Hi
As key is broken in ignition and steering lock is off any ideas how to to get car into neutral as it's an automatic so i can get in towed home by a friend

You didn't say which year A6 or if it is AWD. Check your owners manual for towing instructions. You can rent an auto trailer from U-Haul if you have AWD, however you will need an approved tow vehicle with a trailer hitch. If you had AAA membership, you would get a few tows each year. Of course this is only if you didn't go off road down a mud trail.
Many automatic transmissions can't be towed in neutral with the driven wheels on the ground.
You can search the forum for "ignition switch", etc. Don't forget to disconnect the battery and wait several minutes before doing anything which could trigger your airbags.
You should get the BentleyPublishers.com CD Audi shop manual, as you may not find enough information online.
