LH motor mount not bolted to engine??
I'm new here and I had audi 5000's back in the unintended accel days (made for some cheap used cars then) and recently was given a 98 A6 quattro with a bad trans. We almost have the trans swap done and I noted the driver's side motor mount is not bolted to the engine block and doesn't appear to have ever been bolted on. I was an auto engineer for Chryco and Mitsu for 11 years so I know you can do some funky things with motor mounts to cut down NVH, but leaving it unbolted is pretty unusual - so is it supposed to be unbolted or was this a mistake after some major repair I didn't know about?
Thanks
Pat
PS: When we got the car it drove forward enough to get it on the trailer and later stopped any forward movement after driving it about a block (reverse was ok). For some reason I went straight to replacement instead of filter and oil change. There were some unhealthy noises coming from the trans, but not banging/it's all bad noises. I'm wondering if it's pretty common for these transmissions (CJD) to eventually loose enough 'permanent' fluid to stop running forward and really only need filter and fluid? When I drained the fluid from the old transmission it was dirty and quite pearly (metal flakes), so replacement may have been required.
Thanks
