Long drive - gas mileage
Drove from Houston to Baton Rouge and back yesterday. 3 people in the car. Some luggage, not too much.
Gas mileage:
Houston to Baton Rouge (Gas: Shell 89) - Average speeds 85-90 mph, no cruise control - 19.11 mpg
Baton Rouge to Houston (Gas: Shell 89) - Average speeds 70-75 mph, 50% cruise control - 27.5 mpg
It was hard to believethe numbers atfirst, but just a 10-15 mph reduction in speed,in addition to smoother acceleration and driving, increased my gas mileage by 8 mpg which is a lot!It surpised me. But driving at 70 mph with the cruise control on is really boring though.
Thought I would share, especially with gas prices being such a soresubject with everyone.

I usuallu get 17-19 in everuday driving which involves traffic in town driving mostly and short distances. Going to the beach thru mostrly back roads and some 4 lanes, I got high 23's. HWY probably 24's
Cruise control at reasonable speed makes a big difference in mpg - but it is boring. If I cruise to Detroit at 70-72 I get about 23-25 mpg; when I drive at a fun speed like 75-85 it drops to 21-22. I've never had the patience to drive at 55-60 but the computer shows 27-29 mpg at that speed for short distances.
