What a6 model has the widest range of tuning options? 2.8, 4.2, or 2.7t.

hmm, 2.7 T , possible problems with turbos. (its twin turbo). over 100k have to be replaced. 2.8 is not that powerfull (lazy like mine ) . 4.2, nice massive engine V8 . Get 4.2. Hmmm, that's my opinion.

the ones i could afford would have 100-150k, so the 4.2 sounds good. 2.7t if the turboshave already been replaced. How is tuning on a 4.2? thanks

2.7 is great for tuning. 4.2 is great stock. 2.8 is neither.

The search function on these boards will get you more specific answers.

You can also search under the S4 area for specific tuning for the A6 2.7T since it is the same engine. Of course, exhausts, intakes (many believe stock is fine so no upgrade needed) and a few other pieces would be different since they are different bodies.

Lots of discussion in this forum about when turbos have to be replaced. No conclusions other than at some point in the car's life, they may need to be replaced. Anecdotes from people who have replaced at 50-60k and others currently at 160k with OEM turbos. I'm at 102k. My plan is to bite the bullet and replace them with K04s (I've read this is about a $5-8000 job) when they finally go, but it should add quite a bit of hp over chipping. And still cheaper than a newer S6 or an RS6.

Drive both a 2.7T and a 4.2. The 4.2l is faster stock. I think the 2.7T can equal it with basic chipping, and with more aggressive mods it is probably faster. Which is more reliable - the 4.2l but mods for more hp sound limited. The fender flaring is different on the 4.2l also.

Only the 2.7T is available with a 6-speed. Stay away from the 2.8. Do lots of searching in this forum to read about +/- in the various 2.7T years 2000-2004.

I know all the 4.2 boys won't like this.... But the 2.7T is faster from 0-60 than the 4.2.... And a 2.7T with a six speed manual is WAY FASTER from a stand still (duh). You can't get a 6 speed in the 4.2... Do a lot of research... If you get a 4.2, you could probably outrun a 2.7T at high speeds, but living in the US doesn't permit the prime high speed driving that the 4.2 specializes in. Personally, I would go with a 2.7T with the manual six speed. You can get the 4.2, but a 2.7T will beat you off the line and in the long run in a strait up street drag race.... The only draw back that the 2.7T with a standard transmission (besides a standard sport package and wheels that are optional on the 2.7) is that your gonna have a hard time finding one!!

0-60

2.7t = 6.5
4.2 = 6.0 flat
2.8 = 10 minutes....If you want a RELIABLE fast powerful rig without modding, go with 4.2. If you want to mod and build go with the 2.7t. If you dont care but want an A6, go with the 2.8. If you want a faster car than the 4.2 than buy a faster car and forget about modding and wasting money plus limiting your reliability. Although the 0-60 times are pretty much the same the 4.2 will best the 2.7t from 70-100+ all day because of the torque (this is stock). Modded = who knows. Everybody's **** is different.
