maxing out at 140 mph???

The 2005 4.2 for the US is governed at 130 mph. The 140 mph reading that you are getting is probably the result of a speedometer error. In Europe the 2005 4.2 is goverened at 155 mph. A few companies that offer to remove the top speed governor report that the 2005 4.2 will top out at 172 mph without the governor.

I have no idea where you guys are. Once upon a time, when I was way younger and stupider, I got a Firebird up to NEAR 140, I chickened out before the curve I knew was just ahead.
Where you guys are, I don't know. In the US, you can't do that speed, anyhow, legally. Of course you can drive as fast as you want if you can outrun the radio.
Cheers,
George

Greetings Kevin. Thanks for the reply Bro. When you say the USA '05 4.2L can top out at 172 mph without being governed do you mean it has to have a chip installed? Forgive me but I'm a little new to the auto lingo. Is it an expensive process if I wanted to switch it to not being governed? And I'm guessing that will probably void my warranty right?

You don't need a performance chip, instead you need to re-map the software that limits the top speed to 130 mph. I believe that MTM and several other suppliers offer the re-map.
If you are looking to "chip" the car for additional performance, you can go with Unitronic and get the car up to 355 HP and 330 torque. The Unitronic software also removes the 130 mph governor, though I am not sure if it replaces it with the European 155 mph or makes the car drag limited. The Unitronic softawre runs about $550.

Ok cool. I read on one of the other bulletins that pretty much any modification will increase the likely hood of a transmission failure. Would the re-mapping be a safer route since it's a software change as opposed to a hardware change with the "chip"?

Interesting, I have an 05 a6 4.2 and i have taken it to 145, now i read above that it is supposed to be governed at 130? however i did this speed with my friends corvette and my speedo was correct at 145 because he was matching my speed. How can this be?

Lyosha,
probably you have a car originally registered in the state of NY.
Its governor might not be able to see the correct speed limitation...
(I know, is a bad joke but I couldn't help it...)
130, 145... same darn thing....you only see a bullet zooming by... probably you don't even have time to read the license plate. If you hug a tree at any of those speeds, the results will be the same. I bet my governed Audi on it.
