Usually it will show up on your instrument cluster illuminated as, "MIL" or "Check Engine". Most Audis use the "Check Engine" inidcator and its usually on the instrument cluster just inside of the speedometer cluster. If you turn the ignition key foward, without starting the engine you should see it illuminate for a few seconds...this is done just each time prior to starting as a test to ensure it has not been disabled or in need of service.

Turn your ign to on don't start the car and they should all light up. The check engine light is a yellow engine with a lightning bolt going through it. I guess that's German Humor for ZAP!! Your fucked!!!

I would think it's more likely that the previous owner disconnected it. Pull the cluster out and have a look.

I'll tell you I've thought of doing it a couple times but I always just fix the thing. I wouldn't mind putting a switch on it though. However I travel with a scanner. AUDI SCANNER don't leave home without it!
