Default mis-matched tires with quattro

Has anyone actually broke their transmission (or anything else) by using mis-matched tires? I'm seeing different opinions about using mis-matched tires. If anyone has actually had a problem with this please post it. My car is '99 A6 avant quattro, got a flat last week, rode around for three days on temp. spare, now have two matching tires in back, two almost matching in front. Tread wear is approx 50% on all four but I haven't measured it. Thanks in advance.

mikee It would do you good to do a search as see what has been said about mismatched tires.
to save you a little time -- check the diameter of the tires you have on the vehicle.

As long as the tire diameters are reasonably close, you will have no issues. Do you think Audi would engineer a car that would blow up a transmission because someone had a flat tire? The transmission is designed to accomodate the case of a set of almost bald tires and a brand new spare.

Thank you for your input. I did not think it was really neccessary, but of course the guy at the tire shop told me I needed 4 matching tires. The owners manual also says something about keeping all tires within 2/32". But my car has "space saver" spare, which is way smaller then the regular sized tires, I don't think they'd have you use a spare that is going to ruin your tranny. Thanks again.
