I just got my a6 back from being service and they told me that my sound pan is missing and that it will cost $315 to replace. Can I find it somewhere else cheaper and do I really need it?

Dealer also said that the sound pans fall off fairly regularly and it’s not unheard of to go through 2 or 3 every 4 years. Is this true?

Pardon my ignorance, but what the hell is a "sound pan"?

 

The sound pan is the lower engine cover. Look under you car at the front, and you will se a big black plastic cover under there.

Man, never heard it called that before. Always called skip plate here, as they are designed to protect engine from road dirt and crap, as well as promote smooth air flow threw rad and engine to help cool. (Some sort of pos/neg pressure zone thing my race buddy tells me.)

 

"Lower engine splash shield" in Motors books. I lost mine too. Probably won't have much luck finding a used one without some damage already on it.
