Default MMI What Is It And How Do You Update??

I was thinking of getting the latest nav disc for my '06 A6 Avant but I'm reading about the MMI and don't understand it's relationship to updating to a new dics. Do you need to update the MMI when you get the latest disc, and how do you do the update? Is it something that we can download and do it ourselves?

MMI is the "Multi Media Interface". It is the software that allows the Nav, telephone, radio, cd player, voice recognition, etc. to interface with each other and be operated by the driver. While I have heard of two people who were able to update the MMI software themselves (they had several failures before they succeeded), it is really a dealer issue. If you are in the US you want to make sure that you have MMI version 33.6 or higher.

Default How Do I Read The Version?

This must be a really obvious answer, but I keep reading of version numbers as a four digit number, but I haven't been able to pick out which four digits they translate to. The top line on my car (US 2005 A6 3.2) reads: SW:C6-HU 6360 10.7.0 0437. Does that mean it's a version 1070?

Thanks!

The nav discs will automatically update when inserted into the navigation unit, an option will pop up on the MMI screen and you just select yes to update.
Updating the MMI must be done by the dealer using the factory scan tool, you shouldn't need to update the MMI when using a newer nav disc.

You have version 10.7, which is a rather antiquated version. There are several improvements with the newer versions.

Default What to Ask For?

So it sounds like I need to take this to the dealer for the update. I had previously asked them to make sure the MMI was up to date. Obviously I wasn't clear enough. Is there a better way to ask or a secret handshake or something? Also, is this a warrantiable item? My car is still under the original warranty, plus I have CPO coverage after that. Lastly, is there a way to know what the most current version is?

Thanks!

You have to complain about something wrong with the MMI in order for them to re-flash it, they won't just do it for you. So if you don't notice something wrong with the MMI or something that seems out of wack then chances are the tech won't bother.

Per TSBs if you complain about intermitenly losing the "surround sound" setting, or a "jumping cursor" on the MMI screen, you will get the upgrade for free if under warranty.

You can buy the cd at you dealer's parts department and then do the update yourself, or you can just have the dealer do the update.
