My 1st Audi and my new problems
Hi, guys, finally got my 1st Audi, A6 2.8L Quattro 2000, 170K miles. When I saw it on the lot could not resist, price was fair. Have to change front left wheel bearing (was extremely noisy), oil, air filter. Have got some other little problems which I’m trying to fix hopefully with your comments/advises.
1- cruise control. The day I tried Audi it was working, next day it stopped. I tried to activate it as manual says-no success. I browsed forum I found it’s typical malfunction for Audis, so I‘ll check soldering quality on cruise control module. What else can be a reason? My turn signals, break, headlights are working correctly. I do not know how to check vacuum pump/lines for cruise (once I had cruise failure at Chry Concorde – tiny rubber hose was damaged..)
2- outside mirrors – driver’s got that brownish color (see pic). Can it be cleaned or what is best option here. Mirrors are tinted, no memory feature.
3- Driver info display – so many dead pixels its not readable. I found one company on eBay who changes display for $125. You have to ship the whole cluster. Have anyone did this? New cluster is $700…..
4- Water temp gauge – usually not working, sometimes works. What should I check?
Few moments about engine/transmission – when I start engine and put on “D” my rpm are high around 2200, it takes couple minutes before it returns to normal rpm/speed ratio. What I do now – I put in manual mode from the start, drive 1-2 mile then switch to “D”. Am I doing right? When I turn off ignition the engine slows down with a sound like engine has turbine (or powerful vacuum cleaner) – is it normal?
Recently I took Audi to the dealer who originally sold it to the 1st owner. It was a frequent visitor in service but nothing major. Carfax gave 36 records for my VIN, although I did not buy whole report, for that mileage can it be normal? BTW, serviceman suggested to run diagnostics ($128) and fix cruise control. Can diagnostics tell you exactly what’s wrong with cruise? I do not want to spend unknown amount for dealer’s fixing it. I appreciate every comment and advise on my concerns. Thank you.

As far as the RPMs, I'm not much of a help as I don't have a tiptronic. Normally, after the car warms up the RPMs should drop from about 1100-1200 (cold start) to 900. As I engage "D", the RPMs don't spike unless I step on the acceleration.
You may have a bad outside temp sensor that "tells" the ECM is "winter" outside. It resides inside the front bumper.

Welcome to the forum and congrats on the purchase.

Great thread! I came across many of the same problems with mine.
I also noticed my cruise control doesn't work but first thing I checked was the fuse and there wasn't even one in there. Don't really have a lot of time to play around with the car but I'll be referring back to this.
Thanks for the reply!

Do a search on VagCom in this area and purchase one....
Outside mirror - only fix is a repacement --- I would get a used one --Two sources if your local junk yard dosen't have Audi -- Shokan in NY and Force five in Concord NH -- both are also good for new parts

1.) If you're having cruise control problems, PLEASE read my posts over at AudiWorld: http://forums.audiworld.com/showthread.php?t=1728645 and the specific DIY here: http://forums.audiworld.com/showpost...79&postcount=3 It has fixed dozens of people's cars and if your cruise isn't working and you have an old car (nearing 8-10 years), then this will be the fix nearly 95% of the time. Even if you don't see any problems with it (failed solder joints sometimes require microscopes to see though), it certainly wouldn't hurt to resolder things, just try it and be happy when it works. The vacuum hose has not been the common fault for these cars.
2.) You weren't specific about the dimming for your mirrors: do you have the auto-dimming feature? The rear-view mirror will have a photosensor in front and will lack one of those flippy things to tilt it down. If you wish to keep this feature on the mirrors, it'll cost you a good bit extra wherever you go. Sometimes the best bet for getting new mirror glass (after looking around at junk yards and other places don't work) is to just talk to the dealer. I don't recommend getting a crappy piece of a mirror that sticks on top of the old stuff - the actual mirror pops right out of these anyway, so it's not like it would be hard to replace. But obviously if money is the problem then you would need to go that route (but then maybe you should have thought a bit more before buying an Audi haha).
3.) If you want it fixed, you're going to have to pay a decent amount of money. I went ahead and had ModuleMaster.com replace mine and it is beautiful now (100% of the pixels work, and it comes with a full 5 year warranty). It was $120+20s/h for their service and then it cost me $30 to get it to them (they're in ID), so $170 for a new display with warranty from a great standing company.
Engine/tranny.) There is nothing wrong with it. The car warms up the tranny by shifting to higher gears at higher RPMs for the first few minutes, this is how it is supposed to work and does not mean that there is anything wrong with it - just let it do it. You didn't mention anything about how the car shifts which is a major part to this category - if you elaborate more we could get to the bottom of it easier.
Furthermore, the turbine sound is coming from the auxiliary fan which runs the AC when there isn't enough air being pumped through the system (to keep its occupants cold!); you can easily test this by turning off the AC and waiting around 20 seconds until the sound stops, again nothing wrong here - it is how it works.

Chefro, thanx for your answers.
corallini081 - i forgot to mention i checked all fuses-they are okay. 1 slot really is wierd...cover with tags does not match with manual...Today replaced vacuum hoses where could, cruise still not working. Tomorrow will check control module for soldering issues.

I've updated my post quite a bit now, please check it out (the one two posts up).
Chefro: you're giving him B-rated advice. I mean if you talk about failed cruise control with audi's (module 5GA 004 397-16) then the module and solder joints need to be mentioned - they have been the main cause of failure in recent years (because age/time causes the problem). And the way the engine/tranny/AC works is completely normal and should be presented to him as so. If you don't know how these engines/systems personally work/run, then don't give him your BS answers from your '95 audi. I have nearly the exact same car as him and have been through every single thing on his list personally.

your temp gauge not working is definately the coolant temp sending unit. Pull plug and look at top of it before buying new one, for some reason they used three different types on same year/engine. Only about $10-15 and about 20 min to swap out, this may fix your high idle problem too. I agree with the advice about investing in vag-com, that way you can diagnose this and future problems, sorry to say, but there will be future problems. Good luck.

If you know another reason beside the module soldering and the vacuum, please do give him that A-rated advice.
2) I don't know about YOUR car, but mine NEVER spikes to 2000 RPMs when SIMPLY engaging D-gear, UNLESS I GIVE IT GAS.
I only replied TO WHAT I READ, not (in)to something else.
Thanks...
For info: Most cars that do not have a mechanical throttle linkage (my 2000 2.7t is one) do not use vacuum for the cruise control. It is in the engine computer of a "drive by wire" system.
Many newer cars are like this. In fact the option for CC is just the switch and a recoding the computer to use it.
