There are some rebuilders out there on the web, a ZF specialist would be worth finding as well. I would go this way and get the longest warranty I could. Just find one with some track record. A local specialist can install it, probably run $1800 for that. The tranny will run about $1800. $3500-4500 is the norm for an installed rebuilt unit. The warranty is usually a year. I suggest having the cooler flushed as well, to be sure there is no debris in it.
The trick to making this happen for the best is to do your homework.
I just had my A6 AC compressor seize up (go figure at 60K miles!) and spent a few extra dollars to have it towed to a local specialist to do the work.

After all their tests and I was 170.00 dollars poorer they told me the samething i told them "that i need a tranny". So the guy trys to sell me and goes "well i shaved a bit off the price for you" and offers me the tranny and install for like 7800.00, ha ha (service being 125.00/hr). So now i'm on the look out for a good rebuilt one any ideas or any different ways to go (maybe conversion to manuel)? Thanks
