Default new audi owner with a questian about front end hum.

I just purchased a 01 4.2 liter a6 about two weeks ago. I love the car but have noticed some front end humming at higher speeds. It seems like this is louder when I am leaning or changing lanes to the right. It sounds like it might be a bearing issue but since I don't know tons about the car yet. I thought someone else who might have had the same problem could enlighten me.By the way the car has 75000 on the speedo.

Do you feel any vibration in the steering wheel?

This is starting to sound like something I'm coming across. I start to get vibration at around 100mph. God I hope it's not the bearings.

tires seem to be ok. the guy I bought it from put michelin pilot's on it about 20 thousand miles ago. The hum is what concern's me though. I thought tire's as the 1st problem also. I've own'd many bmw's and that was always a problem with them to. Get the tire's new and balanced right and you'll float down the highway. I think I'm gonna change the bearings myself just to be on the safeside. They are only about 35 dollars a pop.

snosk8luke - you know how to do that? geez i need to take a frikkin auto shop class. only $35 for the parts and then be able to do it myself. while i'm somewhat mechanically inclined, some things I shy away from. changing brakes and rotors are second nature, messing with the bearings seems a bit nerve-wrecking considering how important they are.

Yeah I know what you mean but doing thing's myself has saved me so much money over the years. I usually just buy the bentley or go online and find a site where someone has done it before and took lots of pics. I've done bearings before on a bmw 540 and also on several jetta's. Just put it all back together the way it came off. The first side will be a bitch but the other side will be a breeze. All you need is a press that you can buy for around 70 bucks at the hardware store and some grease. Kidding, but it's not that hard. I've learned that by taking my car apart, I get to learn it from the inside out. Not just drive it but know it. Sound's weird but that's just me.

Oh I know where you're coming from. I had a Pontia Fiero that I wouldn't hesitate to tear into. It was my second vehicle so if I screwed something up, it didn't really matter. Eventually I'd get it fixed. I no longer have a second vehicle (unless my motorcycle qualifies but it's been raining a whole lot) and I don't want to do this without knowing that I can drive it in a few hours. My girlfriends father is rather mechanically inclined and I'd imagine he'd have a press. Let me know when you finish yours and if that fixes the humm. If it does, then I know what I need to do. Although from what I hear, it's probably not a bad idea to do them anyway. I have +88k on mine so it's probably due anyway.
