Default New Problem,

2002 Audi A6 3.0

A couple weeks ago I noticed that my (red) battery light was staying lit for a few minutes after start up. Then a couple days ago after I started up the car the (yellow) battery light in the cluster came on followed by nearly every other light on my dash coming on, then I started to take off and after I got up to speed all the lights went off.

Would a battery going out cause this to happen?

The car right now is in the shop to have the Power Steering pump replaced.

The mechanic called me and asked me if I have been having to put fluid in it? I told him know because the level had stayed good the whole time.

I asked him why and he said because all my belts were covered in oil.

Could the oil on the belts have anything to do with it?

I would presume I would have to replace the alternator, was just curious if the oil on the pulley would/could cause the symptoms I had.

The oil on the belt can cause the belt to slip.

the oil could have dripped into the alternator causing premature failure also.....

Oil on your belts could cause thenm to slip and mess up the charging.. I'd change the belt and then check the alternator. Checking the alternator is EZ if you have the right tools, or go to Autozone. There is no need to fix something that is not broken

I'd say the belts are slipping. Once the friction from running the car got the alt spinning the lights went off. Clean everything realllllllly well and run her!
