Default noisy CV joint and dropping body elevation?

2003, 52K, 2.7T. CV boot got ripped open. On sharp turns, I have had noise from the CV joint for ~ 1500 miles so far. No noise when the wheels are straight. I need to put 1000miles on interstate before taking it to mechanic. Do you think the current condition can survive another 1000 miles?

Today I found the front left of the car (that has the bad CV joint) is lower in elevation than the front right by 0.5in. Is this difference in elevation a sign that the axel is failing (such as breaking)?

Okay.. after reading several posts here, I decided to do DIY. Looking for aftermarket parts, each axle from EMPI for automatic trans costs about $90. Any opinion on this make or if not any suggestions?

What's the size of the hex driver to change the axle bolt? Bentley repair manual book suggests M16 (16mm diameter) but the posts in this forum suggests 17mm.

Thanks (I am in the midwest)..
