Octane question....again.

Octane issue
everyone has a different point of view, you are talking about Premium oil in New Jersey. I live in Kurdistan region of Iraq, we dont even have a specific brand, they say it is ( the just claim) 93, but who knows. My car makes too many bad noises on this ' 93 ' octane fuel

Please note that in North America the Octane number posted is not the same as in the rest of the world. In North America two tests are run, the Motor Method (typically a lower number) and the Research Method (the test used in the rest of the world). These are added together and then divided by 2. Thus the posted octane number in North America is always lower than the number posted elsewhere, for the exact same product.

use the good fuel. You can try a can of chem-tune to clean the inside of your engine which may allow you to use a lower octane. The cans are $40 though and you have to get them from Australia. Ferrari / Audi / etc are using them here to get performance back on cars with some mileage on them. I can get it for you if you want to try it out. Its the only world wide product that's been Bosch approved for this kind of thing.

Been Using 87 for close to 100K
Been Using 87 for close to 100K and I'm thinking of going to 83 or 85 sick of the extra $.20 a gal. I need to off-set the cost of all the oil I have to put in cause it just runs out the oil pan gasket. But i'm at 169K miles, so I might care a little less than others!

Not possible! The A6 is designed to run just fine on the 83 octane fuel sold in the States. It can have no adverse impact on the valves. In theory, you could give up a little horsepower and fuel mileage. My twin turbo works just fine on 83. No pinging and no knocking. Where do these stories come from? There are some vehicles out there that demand 87 octane, but not our A6's.

I have run my 2.7T from 37k to 216k miles generally on midrange and occasionally alternating between midrange and premium. The gas mileage is pretty consistent at 23-24 mpg highway and I cannot notice a performance difference. I did a little research years ago and the 2.7T is lower compression than either the 3.0 or 4.2, so lower octane is not as serious. That said, at 20 cents a gallon more I would alternate and if it is greater I just use midrange. I would never use regular.

And you would not use regular; why? The 2.7T sold in North America is designed to run on regular. I notice no mileage difference between regular and premium. I notice no performance difference. The additive package between the two grades is the same. I don't doubt that the 2.7T's output is higher on the expensive stuff, but I find its output more than adequate on regular. I helped set up the fuel quality program in my state so I have more than a passing interest in this subject.
