Jack up the car. Open/remove the plastic shield/pan. Once opened, you should see a metal oil filter on the driver side. It is mounted sideway.

i have same model , and i just replace the oil few days ago. acces to the filter is on driver side of the engine at the bottom, remove half or all the bellypan and you will see it. i don`t have the owner manual , i add 6 qt of oil , is anyone who know how much oil do i have to put in an 01 A6 2.8 quattro, and the dipstick is kind of confusing me , i know is silly question but i don`t know witch one is maximum oil to the top orangeplastic or the top of the metal treads.
i have 54k miles on the car , i plan to have change the oil , oil filter, air filter, fuel filter, spark plugs and cabin filter, the car runs good, from what i know until 40k was service regular to dealer, is in a good shape inside and outside, any advice , maintenance advice? i will add some pictures too because i change few small things on it, but i will add another post for that. thank you

You fill to the bottom of the orange (top of the metal) for the full line. There should be an arrow on the dipstick that points to the bottom of the orange marker. It should take 6.3 quarts including oil filter capacity. What kind of oil did you run in it?

6.3 qrts is right for 2.8, and for 2.7T it is 7 qrts. My dealer puts 5-30 Castrol Syntec.
