Oil temperature observations @ 0o F
I drove about 40 highway miles last Monday night with the temperature bouncing from 0o to 6o. First off, the water temperature gauge sat exactly in the middle and never budged, but the oil temperature was barely above the second tick, ~210o, even when I ran the car for almost five miles at 85-90.
Last night coming back from Detroit in 20-26o weather, driving mostly 75-85 for 175 miles, again the water temperature was dead center but the oil temperature almost reached the third tick, or ~225o.
So what, I guess. But that tells me my thermostat is working right (or my gauge is busted) and the 7+ quarts of oil in that sump cool off quickly when exposed to sub-freezing temperatures.
I continue to be impressed with this car even after 4 years and at 127k miles.

Mine behaves in the same way. I drove from Philadelphia to long Island at about 65-70 and the temp needle stays straight up and the oil temp did not move. Interestingly enough I sat the car on my friends drive idling for about 5-10 minutes and the temp jumped about 1/4 of the way up the gauge. guess this shows how good the oil cooler is.
what engine do you have.
