Default Which one to get?

I am looking at two A6 sedans this week.

I need help on which to pick.

1) 2001 A6 2.7T 85K miles $7500
From a used car dealer.

2) 2002 A6 3.0 111k miles $7000
Private seller. All service records available.

I haven't seen either, but lets assume they are in equal condition.

Which would you choose?

Have you read up on A6s? Don't buy either without knowing what you are getting into.

Having given fair warning, the 2.7t is preferable over the 3.0, BUT you have to look at them both to see what condition they are in. See if you can get the VIN off of it and see if a dealer can tell you the history, particularly the torque converter as that year had issues.

Good luck,

Bob

I have been reading up, and honestly I am a little leery. The wife really likes them, so I am considering it.

I have always been a Volvo guy, and do much of my own maintenance and repair (brakes, rotors, suspension, timing belts etc).

We are also looking at Volvo S60.

Is the Audi A6 maintainable by the home mechanic?

As a long time Volvo driver I can tell you that you will appreciated the built quality of an Audi over Volvo and will enjoy the way it drives. As for maintenance, they are about equal. We've only owned 2 volvos over the years, a 240 with 275k on it when it died and our 850 with 337k miles on it when we traded it for the A6. The only thing I miss about my 850 is the seats. There is nothing too complicated or special about the A6 that makes it complicated to work on compared to a modern Volvo. 2.7 A6's have torque converter issues, but so does the S60/70, control arms need to be changed often in the A6. The best advise I can give is to take any Audi you are interested in to your local VW/Audi dealer and have them inspect it.

As a Volvo owner, you should know the benefits of the V series of Volvos. So look into the Avant line of Audis.
