The wiper actuator module has stripped out where it attaches to the base of the wiper arm. Or, the wiper arm has stripped. I would look for a good used part to replace it.

I don't want to dispute the answer you got. Only to say, a few months ago, shortly after I got my 97 A6 out of the shop, coming home from a distant soccer game, sporadic rain, was using the intermittents.

Driver's side started hanging up, then over shooting. Used them VERRRY sparingly, afraid it would fall off.

Next morning, looked at it, seems to me that, unlike my old Audis, it is not on a splined shaft, but a taper. The nut was loose. The cap covering the nut is a bit tough to get off, but snugging with, I think, a 13 mm box and all is well.

Cheers,

George

Oh, you MAY have stripped gears. I would check, first, to see if the nut is loose.
