Default (P R N D) flashing on dashboard

The gears display on my dashboard has be flashing every now and then.

Can anyone please tell why this might be happening? I spent almost 4 hrs on this forum going through different threads searching for this answer before posting a new thread.

Could this be possibly related to my earlier problem when my car was not picking power/accelerating on reverse gear?

Please help. Thanks.

It means welcome to limp mode! You need to buy a vag com. No one can tell you whats wrong with your car without fault codes from the TCM.

OK. That doesn't sound good. Vag com is the next step then.

Under what circumstances does the car go into limp mode?

VAGcom is a sure way to go. But there are many cases the tranny goes into limp mode with flooded TCU. TCU is located below the passenger carpet. You might want to visually inspect it first.

Tranny is shifting normally all the way upto the 6th gear. Still able to hit good speed. But the pickup has been quite slow lately. The flashing has been occasional. Last time was yesterday afternoon. None today.

Jim - No, did not check the tranny oil. I bought this car 2 weeks back. The ex-owner had full service history. Tranny oil was last changed on 27th April 09. I'll still check it though.

Hxgaser - OK, I'll check the TCU as well. If that's the problematic area, what signs should I be looking for?

Guys, some help here please. My 115k servicing is due. Will leave it at the service station tomorrow.

If a car goes into limp mode, does it come out automatically to normal mode? Or it stays that way untill the codes are reset? I ask because the (P R N D) hasn't flashed for the last 3 days. Does this mean the car is out of limp mode now?

The only symptom now I feel is the acceleration has been quite slow. But otherwise, its running fine.

Thoughts?
