Default Pictures of my New A6.....and a Question

The pictures are down below but I have a question first...I went to start the car this morning, (It was cold...about 25 degrees) to move it to take these pictures. When I did, it started right away, but for a few seconds there was a horrible rattle coming from the engine, and a high pitched wine that sounded like a loose belt or something. The rattle stopped within a few seconds, and the whine lasted about a minute...but its disturbing. I hope there isnt a major problem with this thing as I haven't even gotten it registered yet, much less seriously driven it. (Besides the test drive) Any ideas about the nosies?

Anyway, here are the pictures

Those are normal noises. The rattling is a lifter pumping up. The whining noise is the fan clutch. I have both noises as well.

Thanks Bob, glad to know its nothing bad.

Just out of curiosity, what is the "lifter". I know what the fan clutch is, but I cant say I've heard of a lifter before.

I like the ride, always loved the Audi and BMW wagons! Wish my wife would want to drive one and I'd buy an old S6 or Allroad 4.2...
I also like the Nissan or Datsun in the background

Thanks for the help guys.

The car in the background is the one I've been driving since I sold my old car. Its a 1982 Datsun 280ZX, and only 40k on the clock! It belongs to my girlfriends father...it's his "Fun" car, so he was more than happy to let me borrow it while I've been car shopping. It's fun to drive...for a while. But after a few weeks you miss things like decent headlights and a back seat.

FireGod, Lifter is actually the fuel pump.

LOL, I was thinking the same as whenever I start it makes these sounds...and I was thinking that Audis are made like air-crafts. When the aircraft taxis...it makes all those similar noises (of course those are from hydraulics) but the best part was that somewhere on the owners manual, it says to use the external CB antenna, as using CB inside without it might interfere with the functioning of the car. Reminds me of captain's warning to switch of cellphones and wireless devices before take off.

Firegod,

I would of thought that'lifter' refers to a hydraulic valve lifter. They will rattle until the necessary oil pressure is provided by the oil pump. My 2.8 30V Passat does this often but only for 2 seconds or less on a cold start up.

I think JCMAC is right. Try to hear it first time after and oil change, the sound is even worse until the oil get around in the system. I take it to be normal (well for Audis)
