Plastic cap over lug nuts
Last night I got a flat tire going home from work and I pulled over to the side of the freeway to change out my tire. It was my first flat with my Audi. I had always assumed that there was a special tool or something along with the car jack and the wrench that would help take out the plastic caps that go over the lug nuts. But I was wrong and I sat on the side of the freeway dicking around with it. I ended up scratching up my wheels trying to get them out and I had to stop. I took out the two lug nuts that didn't have the plastic caps and I had to wait for the AAA guy to come help me take out the rest.
My questions:
Do the plastic caps over the lug nuts serve any purpose aside from the cosmetic value?
Where can I find a tool to take these suckers out?
Oh btw, I have the stock 16" wheels....
Thanks!

I ran into the same issue when I went to put on my new 18"s. I ordered new chrome-looking bolt caps for the new rims and they came with a little tweezer thingy to pull off the caps. I got the old ones off by using the tire iron, putting it over one of the caps, and slowly pulling the iron off of them while twisting and applying pressure to the cap. Sorry for the frustration, I know how you feel.
There should be a plastic tool that looks like a glorified set of tweezers in with your jack. Of course, it's real easy to lose, so it might be long gone. It could also have fallen to the bottom of the storage are so look around. If not, they should be dirt cheap even from the dealer.

Tool looks like this (pictured is the one for locking lugs, but tool and caps are the same)...as others have mentioned, look in the trunk cubby tray below where your jack is located. It should be there in a small plastic zip-lock bag. If not, get it from the dealer for a whopping $1.
I have a 2000 2.7 and mine came with a little tool to get the caps off. It has a loop to put your finger through and a little hook on the end. You slide it in next to the cap, turn it a little and pull the cap out.
