RE: is it possible to install keyless start button?
Thread from the dead....
Anyhow, may I ask.... Why would you want to do this? With a somewhat flashy car (A6) it would just make stealing it as easy as busting out the window, unlocking the door, and vroom.

I'm speaking a little hypothetically here, but...
It would be possible. To keep from having to use the key to unlock the steering column, you could remove/cut the locking pin that keeps the column from moving. You'd then need some type of encoded key-fob system that's tied into the ignition system, so that you have to be within, say 10 feet of the car to allow it to start, otherwise the whole thing is just a massive security risk. You could use an aftermarket remote starter kit to do the actual starting procedure; either rig the "start" button to the keyfob, or hack the remote starter unit to allow it to accept a wired connection.
There might be a way to adapt whatever module they use in later cars to the bus on on the older car, thus allowing you to use some of the factory parts without all of the hacks, but either way, it would be a crapton of research.

I have the keyless start on my 05 4.2. It will only start if the fob is inside the car. It will not start even if the fob is held up to the outside of the car window. So I don't think that it ismuch of a security risk.
