Default Question about removing the center resonator in the exhaust

Thinking of replacing the middle resonator with just pipes. Still leaving the rest of the stock exhaust in tact. My goal is to still be quiet when cruising, but get some growl when I get on it. The car is way too quiet under full throttle...

Any thoughts?

Its not gonna change as much as you think, i played around with that on my b5 s4 and i didn't hear s*** of a difference when i got on it. Same thing when you just replace the rear muffler and leave the resonator in. Just buy a full exhaust system, borla makes some good stuff thats a really mellow tone that doesn't bother you when your driving, plus you get a HP gain.

Default RE: Question about removing the center resonator in the exhaust

I was kinda just looking for a little something to hold me over til I did get a full exhaust. Its kinda low on my order of mods. Big fan of Borla tho, I have one on my 300zx TT and I love it. Far from quiet in that case because I have no cats and bigger down pipes, but still love the sound.

I will prob give it a try anyway. I just wanted to make sure it wasn't going to sound bad or get raspy. I doubted it would be raspy since its a turbo car, but just in case.

The A6 exhaust is quite different than the S4 exhaust tho. True dual & dual muffler may make a difference in the outcome of removing it.

Anyone else have experience with this?

I have a v8 and removed the resonator..Now it sounds like a V8 but without any raspiness or annoyance inthe cabin. Do it..you won't be dissapointed. Then replace the piping with 2.5 and get good mufflers and you just saved a shitload of $$ vs. a full catback. Performance is damn near the same. Your only getting 8-10 HP out of a full exhaust anyways. Good luck!

Well I am sure the turbo V6 would result in different sound than the V8 (love the 4.2's sound) but I guess it can't hurt.. Plus I have an 01, so all the extra $$ spent on fancy shiny polished cat-backs isn't seen one bit anyway...

I did this with my '02 4.2 and had nominal results. The center resonator was just straight-through pipe anyway.

Car went from magic-carpet quiet, to sounding more like a Ford Crown Vic. Still too quiet, hear more belt and accessory noise from engine than exhaust sound. With the 2.7T, the turbos should do even more to dampen the sound.
