i will suggest you play with the exust pipe a little to see if you can provock the noise, some time a bracket on this may be the culprit. cases have been reported to be within the catalitic converter in other cars. otherwise just watch for a plate taping from around the source of the noise.

There is an inner exhaust pipe (pipe within the exhaust pipe) that sometimes comes loose and rattles. The shop I go to drilled a couple of small holes in the outer and welded the 2 pipes together, this did not help so now they tell me they need to remove the pipe from the car to weld it properly.
I thought it was the cat but the shop told me that if it was the cat, it would rattle by just banging on it, engine off, and it does not, so we are pretty sure it is the enner pipe.

Eww! Im liking the new forum lay-out.
I have the same problem, 01 2.7T, let the clutch out in 1st and it rattles till about 1500rpms. If i go into a gear to early and the r's are low it rattles again.
Livin with it for now. Will address it later when i take the car in for something else. Let me know if you address the problem. I'm curious to know what the verdict would be.

What i find a lot on higher mileage engines are the exhaust band clamps rust from the water moving through the exhaust. The rust loosens the clamps, take the clamps off and give it a spin around the block, its gonna be fvcking loud but you shouldn't hear the buzz/rattle anymore. If thats not it put the clamps back on, and check all the bolts holding the cats to the manifold.
