Default Rear Obstacle Sensor - Stopped Working

I've searched the posts and can not find anything: My 02 A6's back up sensor is only working intermittently. Most of the time when I put it in reverse, I hear a beep which lasts about 5-10 seconds or so and then stops. After that when backing up the sensor does not sound when I near something in the rear. I've cleaned the back bumper thinking it was dirty but still does not work. Maybe 1 out of 20 times it works fine with a quick beep and then beeping when nearing something in the rear. Any ideas?

Thanks for the help.

sounds like a good thing. Every time my car beeps I crap my pants thinking something else is broken.

Honestly these cars are so big do you really need a back up sensor?

I beleive you have a sensor going bad in the bumper my ford truck acted the same way when I had two of them go bad on it. I dont know if this trick works on Audi sensors but someone on the ford forum told me how to check these sensors on my truck and it worked - turn your key on but dont start your car then set the emergency brake and put the car in reverse. Get out and place the tip of your finger very close to alomost touching each sensor you should hear a very light clicking noise. If you have any sensors that do not click then they are bad and they can fail more than one at a time I had two bad on my truck.
