Default Replacement engine sounds WIERD

Hi everyone!

I recently purchased a Audi A6 1.8t 1999 from a friend but the engine packed up on her. I went to a local friends garage and they replaced the engine along with the clutch and timing belt kit. The car started instantly. after bringing the car home the next day i drove it to work and the wierd sound is coming from the engine. it seems as if their is a motorcycle by my car. i have no loss of engine power and everything else seems fine. no lights on the dash come up. it starts ok then 10mins later a clicking sound comes from the fanbelt area then it goes worse and worse. someone told me it maybe the alternator, someone else told me it maybe tappets.

Please help i cant afford another engine, and my friend at the garage doesnt have any idea also. by the way the engine code is APU. Please help

Love SAM

Remove the accesory drive belts. Then you will know if it is one of the accesorys or not. If its loud like a motorcycle youll want to check for exhaust leaks also.

Does it come and go as the fan comes on and off. The fan motor bolts come loose sometimes. I would also check to make sure that everything replaced with the timing belt is still tight.

Hi DankHound

My local mechanic has investigated the timing belt and is visually fine. Today I noticed the sound was coming from behind the engine by the Catalyt Convertor, maybe this will help. It takes approximately 20mins for the sound to appear after a cold start. When I press the clutch down on the car the noise seems to get loader.

Many Thanks

Love Sam

clutch thrust bearing no point just changing that change all 3 components clutch plate/pressure plate and thrust bearing, don't get the fly wheel skimmed as its a waste of time and money ( USA skim rip off ) change the flywheel if you think its that bad and its cheaper in the long run

Your not supposed to machine the dual mass flywheel anyway. But yeah thats most likly the culprit. Unless the flywheel or pressure plate was somehow left loose.
