Replacement fuel tank
1998 A6Q Sedan
I had a lit check engine light (it will probably light back up soon), the error code has to do with the EVAP system; P0455, etc. Anyway the codes pretty much mean (according to the manuals online and my mechanic) that there is a lack of pressure in my fuel tank, I have also noticed a fuel smell in the cabin of the car and today my mechanic confirmed that there was some fuel coming from the top of the tank. He is going to charge me $350 to unmount and remount the fuel tank, but he also says I sholud be prepared to fix whatever the problem is when he does this. So if there is a leak in my tank on the top (broken/etc.) I am going to be looking for a new tank, anybody know where I can get this (or what it usually runs for)? Will I have to get it from the dealer?
Alternately what could it be? Maybe something lose where the fuel pump is connected to the tank?
Ideas appreciated.
Edit: I forgot to mention that I've bought a new gas cap before and I don't fuel my tank while the car is on.

well given taht I've never had the tank out of an audi, I can't be 100% sure what it might be. With that said, I would have a very hard time believing that the tank was broken in anyway. I would expect a hose to be cracked, probably one from the evap system. one last thing $350 is alot for droping a tank, I've done it on many a car and it usualy consists of two bolts. I think I might get a second opinion, good luck.
Please do not let him replace the entire fuel tank untill you have ruled out the easy things
Did you recently replace the fuel pump?
I would look into what you suggested, remove the rear bench seat (it just pulls straight up) then there is a cover with 3 screws, under that is the fuel pump
there is a good possiblitly that the seal on the fuel pump is leaking

Thanks, I thought it was most likely something like that as well; I will have the mechanic go under the seat to check the fuel pump, it will most likely be that because I don't see how the fuel tank is messed up itself specially from ABOVE.
I have a 96 a6 avant with a crack where the filler neck meets the tank. If I fill up the tank i get a gas smell inside the car until the gas goes below that level. mechanic said BIG pain to drop tank, so i just dont fill up the tank completely.
