Replacing the starter - 2.8L
When the starter went out in my 95 A6, I though "OK, I'll just find a post about how to remove it." After 2 frustrating hours of searching and coming up with conflicting advice (none of which was correct for my application), I thought "I'll just find an exploded view." Fail, again. So, I turned to my ingenuity... and decided to help some other poor unfortunate souls by posting the procedure.
Disconnect the negative battery cable
Jack the car up and put it on stands
Remove the passenger side wheel
Disconnect the wires to the alternator
Remove alternator bolts (there will be two bolts and you will have to feel around for the upper bolt)
Wiggle the alternator out through the cavity below it
Remove the wires to the starter
Remove the lower starter bolt (located in the front just above the transmission lines - this will loosen the starter and make it easier for you to find the upper bolt)
Set a light in the wheel well, shining onto the back of the starter
While laying under the vehicle, wiggle the starter until you locate the upper bolt (look right next to where the exhaust manifold and muffler pipe connect)
Using a ratchet with a short handle, remove the bolt
Remove the starter through the cavity created by the removal of the alternator
If you do not have a short-handled ratchet:
Place your socket on the bolt, with the ratchet attached
Look down into your engine compartment to find the ratchet
Remove the ratchet from the socket, leaving the socket on the bolt
Replace the ratchet into the socket and remove the bolt from this position
Remove the starter through the cavity created by the removal of the alternator
I hope this helps someone!! (P.S. This is my first post ever on a forum, so please forgive me if I put it in the wrong place or something).
