replacing a turbo

replacing a turbo
Just looking for a little advice or comment from fellow A6t owners. A bought an 01 a couple of months ago with 85k milesand have had nothing but problems since. Replaced torque converter, a couple of o2 sensors, and now have a turbo burning leaking oil. I found an independent mechanic I trust. We found a shop that will rebuild a turbo for about $900. Is this the best route to go, can't seem to find many other options than buying a new one, but big$. Also, does it make sense to go ahead and have the other turbo rebuilt since I'm paying the labor already on taking the engine out?
I love this car when it runs, but this has been the worst car owning experience of my life. What else could go wrong now!

RE: replacing a turbo
$900 sounds like an awful lot just to rebuild 1 turbo. And really to get to the turbos you have to pull the whole engine out so if you are going to be in there it makes most sense to just get both of them replaced. There are people in the classifieds always selling stock turbos for a pretty low price. I would rather spend ~300 for a good used pair than pay 900 for just one rebuilt one and the other left in there. I think most would agree your turbos should be evenly worn.

well let's see...for starters at 85K, have you had the timing belt and all associated parts replaced yet? don't put that off if it hasn't been done yet. CV boots ripped yet? if not, they will, widow regulator, clogged water drain causing water in the floor wells, faded dash, you want me to keep going????

You NEED to replace the turbo's in pairs! I would stay away from a rebuild.
Your best bet if you are going to KEEP the car for a while would be go K04's, yes it will cost more, but they will last a TON longer, & give you a TON more HP & torque.

Adding to Cameron72's question: what other bits are needed to make K04's work? Do you need to change intakes or exhausts? Will a chipped ECU adjust or does it have to be re-calibrated? What other changes are needed?
If/when my stock turbos die, I wouldn't mind going for K04s but I'd like more technical and $$$ information.
