Default Right wheel clunk that won't go away

I'm hoping someone has some ideas.

2000 A6 Avant, 160K.

It all started 6 months ago. Right wheel will 'clunk' when turning left and hitting a bump.
It did rattle a little going straight but most obvious when turning left.

The dealing re-touqued the steering rack (bolts under the battery).
Then I replaced the 4 upper control arms, seemed to be less noticeable but
1 month later it's back with a vengance.

No at about 50 mph and coasting if I lightly touch the brake i can hear a rattle and slight shutter.

I'm thinking about replacing both lower control arms on that side, along with the sway bar bushings.

If that doesn't quiet it do you have any ideas??

If the strut was shot would it just 'clunk' turing left?

Thanks for any help.

You may have to put the car on a lift to find the problem. It could be the sway bar bushings but usually you would not have a shutter. The shutter may be that one or both of the front brake rotors are warped. A lower ball joint can also cause noize when turning. Bad struts or upper strut bearings sometimes rattle when you hit small bumps in the road. Good hunting - Anthonyz

I have some clunking in my front wheel bays and its definetly all of that suspension stuff. This winter they used alot of mag chlor and it was finally too much for the bearings and boots to handle I guess. I am having a HELL of a time with some of the bolts under there too.

I had the same issue with the left front. After replacing the front struts, tie-rod ends, alignment etc., it turned out to be a loose motor mount.

replaced the 2 lower rear control arms and gotta luv it.
Silence again, just that solid thump over bumps, not that annoying
clunk and rattle.

Would taken barely an hour to do both sides........in I hadn't put the left
control arm on the right side, found out right away when turning to the right....lol.

And I have never experienced lock nuts like those on the bushing end of the control arms, broke one hell of a sweat.

I exploded my ball joint seperator today on the front lower control arm. It literally blew up it my face and guess what? The ball joint is still there just as stuck as ever. ARG!!!

I took a gambe and didn't replace the front lower contorl arms because when I put pressue on the bushing it didn't move at all.
Plus I didn't want to take the axle bolt off ( could see myself stripping it out), looks like you have to do that for the front arms.

The lower rears have been my problem so I would suggest replacing those on both sides. The axle bolt is not an issue as its threads are completely covered. Not like that upper pinch bolt! To get a stuck ball joint out, beat on the knuckle right outside the ball joint. This will deform the tapered hole slightly and break the ball joint loose.
