Default staggard wheels for quattro

ok so alot of people are saying not to put a staggard wheel on my A6 2.7t and I would like to know if anybody has tried this with success or not. and what would be the reason this would cause a problem since the wheels arent to different in sizes.

Staggered wheels serve one functional purpose on a car: to tame oversteer (think Porsche 911). That's it. Audis with quattro have a heavy front weight bias (people often kid that Audi hangs the engine in front of the head lights). This causes them to understeer. Putting staggered wheels on a car that already tends toward understeer will make it understeer more.

It's as simple as that.

If you don't care about performance and merely want to do it for looks, have at it.

P.S. The consideration of increasing understeer on a car that already has it is NOT limited to people who track their cars. ANY driver who goes fast in a turn will notice the adverse affects of too much understeer.

ya what he^said, if you are just going for looks keep this in mind, if you go staggered using directional tires then that means you can never rotate your wheels, leading to premature tire wear and uneven tire wear witch = shortening the tire life, poor balance and steering wheel shakes.

Thanks for the replies and it is just for looks. if I want to get on the track i will be getting the old mans vette out or ride the bike. i just love that look of a wide rear section. like the 10.5in rears on my mustang gt. But everyone seems to think it will mess with the drivetrain but I must try, I have actually e-mailed Audi about this matter.

I have to ask... Do you really think it will look cool on a car that's not designed for it? Strikes me kind of like putting a roof rack on a Ferrari.

my friend has an a 98 a6 and hes had a staggard setup for a WHILE now.. hes never complained of any problems and i asked audi tech the same question the other day and he said "its ok as long as the diameter is the same.. quatrro is designed to compensate".... thought id just put in my 2 cents bout what my experience is...

Two issues here... What hurts the car and what hurts performance. Staggered wheels on a quattro will NOT hurt the car unless the diameter is significantly different (>3%). It will degrade performance no matter what.

Because the quattros start out with understeer (except the R8), they'd ideally like wider wheels in front, but I don't think that's the kind of staggering the original poster had in mind.

a roof rack on a ferrari! lol I have 245-50-16 on stock wheels now and the fronts are just right but the back still have about 2inchs till they sit flush. which in my opinion looks bad. the new wheels have a 2.5 in lip in the front and a 4.5 in the rear. but hey all responces are cool. hey southboro has your car been repaintedcuz its got agreat shine.

No repaint on that baby. Six+ year old paint and still looking good. Menzerna product suite + some elbow grease (or a PC) and you too can be the envy of burly men and beautiful women. Follow the link in my sig to my registry page and click on the "how to make your car shine" link for details.
