Default strange crackling noise from behind the radio area related to indicators?

This noise is driving me mad.

Its a 02 2.5 tdi estate model

Ok what it simply is, is a noise a crackling noise which gets worser sometimes then slows down to nothing at all. But recently it has gone berserk. It has nothing to do with the CD player/heater controls cause even when they are off it just starts crackling.

What I have noticed is that when I turn on the indicators it stops all together, but the noise starts again when the indicators are off.

Now yesterday when driving there was no noise, but another problem surfaced and the indicators were not intermittent anymore, they were just solid, not flashing. I'm sure these two problems are related in some way.

Help me out please, I thought it would go away on its own but its crazy, its like a robotic rat hiding in the dash that has a mind of its own and wont shut up.

hazard switch i believe is a common problem. it is also a relay for the blinkers.
just replace the switch and you should be golden.

Would this stop the crackling noise?

Thanks for the reply.

ok I live in the UK and can't find any hazard switches online even the signal stalks. Is it best to go to the dealer in this case?

Depends if the crackling is coming from the center of the dash, or near the headlight switch, becuase those also go faulty and crackle. I have never had a problem with my hazard switch so I can't say for sure.
