significance to the tail pipe location on the A6? I have seen some where the pipes are both together on one side and some that have one pipe on each side and others that have both pipes not showing at all.

Well when you see the two together on one side it is a single muffler design. When they are on both sides the car has a dual muffler design (less restricting). Some manufactures don't show them at all, it's just a design preferance.

 

Pre-2002 A6's pipes were hidden. Tailpipes on one side signify FWD on A6's. 2002+ A6's with quattro have two seperate pipes showing.
