Well, the "vents" button on my climate control was unresponsive - would only come out of the floor or defroster, so I bought another climate control off of a guy on vwvortex. The units look identical (heated seats, etc), but I just finished putting the "new" unit in and it appears to be a richer black than my radio - shiny and deeper whereas my old unit, radio, etc are more of a matte finish. Is it possible that mine is just faded or are there really different shades?

The model #s on the units were identical w/ the exception of the last two letters - mine actually only had one letter - I believe the new one had two (too lazy to go back to the garage to verify though). Could this be it? Did it vary between years or even between interior colors? (I know the parts car he pulled it from was a different color and had a different woodgrain than mine)

Also, has anyone rebuilt a unit before? This will bother me as much as the non-functional vents!! I guess it's time to tear my old one apart and see what the deal is. Damnit...
