After numerous little things going wrong I think I finally got the A6 sqaured away than I get code P0733 (gear 3 incorrect ratio)! What in the world does that mean? Hopefully a transmission service will be the fix. I appreciate any advise.

Where in MN are you? Generally, an incorrect gear ratio means the transmission is slipping in that gear.

 

I have a feeling it's the 4.2 as these are notorious to throw this code.

 

It's a 1997 A6 Quattro 2.8L, automatic. Shifts fine through the ranges but if I leave it in drive it seems to shift harder through the gears. Is it as simple as a trans/service or could I have bigger problems?

Customer Concern:

Transmission goes into fail safe mode and won't shift. DTC P0733 - 3rd gear ratio error. Transmission fluid level checked ok, fluid looks ok.

Tests/Procedures:

1. Check at the Transmission Control Module (TCM) for damage to connector or water damage to connector or wiring. Check fuses and circuit breakers by powertrain control module on passenger side floor.

2. Using a fully functional Audi compatible scan tool, clear DTCs in TCM and access measured value block 005 and observe the solenoid activation while driving the vehicle. Fields 1, 2, and 3 on the display should show solenoids 1, 2 and 3 and the 4th field should show the engaged gear. Check for transmission slippage while on road test. If the solenoids are continuously activated in the different gears, and DTC resets or transmission goes into limp-home mode again, the fault may be internal in the transmission.
Tech Tips:

Tech failed to perform an adequate inspection of the trans. fluid. There are several testers which can test ATF for contamination, which would have revealed the problem without having to disassemble transmission.

Did you ever get the Tranny fixed? Have the same year and engine and its throwing the same code. What did you have done to the car?

 

Brick it's funny you ask because I just took the car to an Audi shop to figure it out. The car was shifting fine but still a little rough on the start so I left it with Bard at Derrick's Auto to fix a vacuum leak and check out this issue. I'll let you know.
