Thule cross bars--correct length for 2001 A6 Avant
Newbie here with 2001 A6 Avant with roof rails.
I am putting on Thule rack system. The folks at RackAttack say that Thule recommends 53 inch cross bars. I disagree.
The distance from the outer edge of the Avant's roof rails is only 40 inches.
I think I can easily get away with the 47" cross bars. I feel that the 53 inch ones will stick out too far and will not look right and might cause someone to hit their head as they get out of the car.
Seeking advice from an Avant or Allroad owner.
As an aside, I also own an X5. The roof rails on that vehicle are 45 inches apart and I have 53 inch Thule rails on it. That's an 8 inch difference. That's why I think I can get away with the 47" on the Avant.

I have yakima racks and I use 48" bars. I am not sure what the assembly difference between the yakima and thule is, but on my yakima, there are about 1 1/2" bar extensions on both sides after the rail clips.
I say you can go either way. If you have a bike carrier, then you may be enough room to install that with the longer bars on the outside.
