Default timing belt

My dealer did atiming belt replacement on my 2001 A6 Avant last year and now I've been told that one of the seals is leaking oil, est. cost $1,800. Shouldn't the dealer have replaced old seals as part of the timing belt service? Seems like a lot of $$ and duplication of labor to now be replacing seals.

Default RE: timing belt

Unless you specifically asked the dealer for a replacement, the dealer would not have replaced them. Yeah, they can be nice and would have suggested at the time, but if they were not leaking then, then you would not have changed them anyways.

As for the cost, it seems a bit high even if they remove the entire front to replace the seals. If I were you, I would find an indy. I hear some folks can replace the seals by merely removing the valve covers and fishing out from the top on some engines. 2 hours tops...
