Timing belt question
i am looking to purchase a 2000 audi a6 4.2 quattro. the timing belt and water pump where done at 70,000 miles. i know the originalbelt had problems of failing before their rated time of 105,000 miles or whatever. my question is did audi or independent timing belt manufatures for audi cars, redesign the timing belt so it would last longer and be more stable for a set period of time? i just want to know if the car im buying will i need to change it again soon, it has a little over 100,000 miles on it now. thank you -Matt

RE: Timing belt question
Alot of times when a timing belt fails there is another accessory driven by the belt that has failed and caused the belt to break. Usually its the water pump, but sometimes its an idler roller or the tensioner that has failed causing the belt to break.

RE: Timing belt question
so what you are telling me is the Oem belts are not a problem? then is the water pump a problem? and did audi redesign the water pump to last long and be more stable. did the 2000 a6 4.2 use a water pump with plastic impellers?

Not sure if they redesigned any of the parts. I dont recall whether that pump has the plastic or metal impellar, but for some reason im leaning towards metal.
