Default Timing marks

Just picked up a 2001 A6 4.2 with 70k miles and peeked in the cam gear covers. Both cam gears have marks on them like the timing belt had been replaced. My question: is that an indicator it was done at some time or does the factory put marks on the cam gears?

Thanks

Show us what the marks looks like, usually you don't have to mark anything because a cam bar holds the cams in place so no marking is necessary. I still want to see what you mean though.

Well if he didnt have a cam lock bar then they would have made marks on the cam gears. I just did my timing belt with no cam lock bar and had to make marks on mine. So it is possible but please post pics.

Here's a pic. Do those yellow lines on the cam gears tell any type of story, or could they be from the factory?
