TIRES
Vermont reporting in.... at his moment I have two A6 Quattro wagons - one has Pirelli Wintercarving studded snows .. the other has all season Continentals... In a side by side comparison the dedicated snows make a world of difference on this vehicle. I wouldn't have said the same thing about my 1983 4wd Subaru wagon.
It all depends upon how much snow you get and how much money youhave to spend.
Ilive near the seacoast of NH and drive into Mass for work each day (100 miles round trip). In a bad year we get maybe one snow storm a week for about 5 -6weeks. The state guys do a reasonable job of cleaning the roads (and dirtyingthem with sand/salt) so most of the time is spent on pavement. The biggest headache is getting in and out of my driveway at home and work. The next headache is the Massholes that think they can go through anything with their SUVs and 4X4 pickups- but that is another storythat can be funnier (and sadder) than my neighbor from KY.
Before the current A6, A6 AvantQ, and 89 200QT, I had a 1988 90Q and 1984 Ur-Quattro. I have been driving Audi's for about 20 years and the AWD feature has never let me down. The onlyAudi that has ever had anything other than all season radials isa front wheel drive A6 because I thought it might need a little help butIlearned that it didn't need special tires. These damn Audi's go through almost anything.
Oh did I mention that the first 10 years I lived about a mile off the main road on a hill that seldom got plowed before I had to leave and never had a problem even when the snow was 12 inches deep?

Drove my car for the first time in some real snow today.. think that we got between 6 - 7 inches.
Im running Yokahama AVS dB S2's on my car.. they are 235/45/17s if I remember correctly.. and they seem to do really well in the snow for that size.... I ran Falken Azenis' on my Avenger when I had it.. they were 17s as well... and they were terrible in my opinion

i am currently running dunlop sport tires and i have had no problems during the last two days of ice and snow! Since i can get around ok,I can take my time and choose carefully... my recent experience makes me think that its unnecessary toswitch tires seasonally... since, im able to get around better than most with sport tires. I am looking into the ConiExtreemeContact, but they are on back-order everywhere. I am also looking at the Nokian WR's per your suggestions... but they costmore than $50 per tire over the contis. and have limited distributors. please advise.
I'll say it again --
I've had very good luck with Yoko TRZ and Yoko Avid --
My 98 200QT, 96 A6 (FWD), and Dodoge Grand Caravan SXT have them. The only reason the 87 A6 AvantQ dosen't is that I got a super deal (less than $60 a tire) on the Michelin Exalto Pilots. The 99 VW Passat 1.7T used to belong to my daughterand is currently in storage so I haven't a clue as to what tires are onit, but it will have Yoko's if we decide to put it on the road again.
The roller skate deserves Yoko's but I can't findthe right size.
