Transmission Fluid change on High mileage?
Agreed it's under filled.
Changed both of mine one had 117K and the other had 130K put 15K on them since then and they are fine. Fluid was not burnt to begin with.
Wow you have to love old threads on controversial topics.
So what tires do you guys like? and what brand oil is best?

i have 97 A6, after changing fluid and filter I test drive it and it shifts good, next morning I started car and after about 30 seconds it start to hear groaning sound, what could it be? low fluid or overfilled. once it warms up for about 5-10 minutes noise disappears.
) with the underfill. If it isn't the first time, and considering your oil leaks - do yourself a favor and check also the differential oil level. It should be "edge of the fill hole", cold of course.
My 1999 A6 has 226K miles and the tranny fluid was never changed by the previous ORIGINAL OWNER. I bought this car because it has been maintained. Except for the tranny. Because they say its a sealed transmission, IE: there's no dip stick...! I ordered the Kit from Blauparts for $114.00. I was quoted over $200.00 from another source. Anyway the transmission had a little trouble going from 3rd to 4th in Tiptronic mode, and auto.
Since changing the Filter and the fluid the transmission shifts effortlessly and like silk. I will be draining again in 2000 miles to get the rest of the old fluid out from the torque converter. Its well worth it and I will also be changing it every 30K from now on.... That's my 2 cents..
It Pays to Maintain...!

I agree with changing the fluid at 100K. At 200+ your asking for trouble.
I wouldn't change it again just leave it be.
Here is why.
A transmission run with dirty fluid looses it's detergent capabilities and has been known to leave excessive dirt buildup on the plates /clutch packs. By installing new fluid with fresh detergent capability you wash the dirt from the packs and this can lead to slippage.
Considering my fluid was brown and nasty at 100K I can only imagine yours at 226K.

Well there are different view on any subject, I am OK with changing it at any millage. I was able to see if there was any metal on the magnets in the pan. Turns out they were covered in sludge and minute particles of metal. But all in all the fluid was black and had no viscosity to it. The filter could not of been functioning at all. So we will see if it proves to be good. I will still change it again to get the rest of the fluid out. I will keep you all posted.

Ya.. I'm of the same mind on changing it even if its been a long time or ever.. especially since people who want to change at a high mileage report that the plates/bands are already slipping and they are not after the change..
Your Absolutely right!
I changed both of mine. twice.
The problem usually is that people go to change the fluid after they notice the transmission is slipping. TO LATE THEN! and then they say it didn't work.
Really???
And people laugh at blood letting???
If oil could fix problems I'd be pouring it all over my check book!!!!!
Anything you will read about oil viscosity shows how it breaks down over time. 100 thousand miles is a long long time. Improper viscosity will cause the transmission to run hotter. Plus it is a liquid and is capable of evaporation. So you at least need to check the level and considering how easy Audi made that process you might as well change it. What a nightmare!
As far as the filter goes I pre-soak mine in fluid to prevent any cavitation upon start up. But I could never see how a fresh filter could be any thing but positive.
I am sure if you drive your vehicle reasonably and kept the fluid level correct you would get a lot of miles out of it. But then again we are all second or third hand owners. Who knows what happened before we bought them.
