Question Transmission Problems!!

Hey People new to this site, I am a TDI guy but helping out a friend with his 2000 A6 Quattro 4.2.

My buddy had a rear transmission seal leak about 5 months ago, changed the seal and changed the fluid right after. Unfortunately he used the wrong fluid (red) T4.

Anyway when he drove up and told me he was having tranny problems, slipping in all gears, worse in reverse.

After visiting your forums and a lot of reading I figured the first step would be change the filter and proper fluid. That went well, felt every gear engaging while filling, even reverse was leaking out like noted.

Unfortunately there was no change to the performance of the transmission. It is like it is in limp mode. Tiptronic is not working at all and does not switch on dash.

Reset learn adaptation. Vag com shows gears in sync with shifting.

This was his scan before the fluid change!

This one came back as soon as we test drove.

Not sure where to go from here besides trying to get a replacement transmission.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!!!

Cheers and thanks...

I have the same exact car as your friend. And coincidentally, I'm also having transmission problems. Though not quite the same as your friends....

Here's what mine is doing: 1st gear catches for two seconds, and then slips. In that two seconds, I can accelerate in first, but after that, accelerating above 1,600 RPM's sends my car into limp mode.

Reverse works, 4th and 5th work. However, I have an incorrect gear ratio error on my TCM as well, along with incorrect gear ratio's on 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. I replaced the fluid and filter, though I'm not sure if I filled it all the way. The fill plug is stuck, so i had no choice but to fill it through the drain plug. Wasn't fun.

In your opinion, does 3 gears giving out simultaneously point more in the "bad transmission" direction, or the "something else is happening" direction? Like I said, reverse works perfectly... So I'm at a loss right now.

As for your friend, when you drained the transmission fluid and filter, what color was the fluid? Did the magnets look like they had an excessive amount of fragments on them? Is there a smell of burning ATF after the seal? And has he considered that one of his solenoids may be bad/blocked/clogged?

Hello Jack, wow, I sympathize.

I have two 2000 Audi A6 4.2 project cars with the same transmission and my tech and I are in the process of dismantling the same transmission from a 2001 car (well, a different letter-code variation, but close enough, i.e., also a ZF 5 HP-24A). One piece of evidence you present doesn't reconcile to my situation, and that's your 4th gear being happy (though I have to admit to being puzzled how you were able to conclude that if the car goes from 1st to 5th, as my project cars do). Anyway ... below is a copy-and-paste from an article that I just wrote, ironically, tonight.

I hope it helps you! Feel free to contact me offline.

Do I know why my two project cars have failing transmissions? No. It could be one or more of several things. But, what is the most likely cause? The circumstantial evidence points to the clutch A drum. Evidence? What evidence?

As I understand the ZF manual for this transmission, 1st gear relies on the A clutch and requires only the A clutch to be energized. Clutches B and C are not energized, and brakes D, E and F are not energized. Because the transmission slips in 1st gear, that tells me that the clutch A drum is the culprit.

The A clutch is not needed for reverse, and the car drives just fine in reverse.

The A clutch is not needed for 5th, which is why limp-home mode puts the car in 5th gear and though it is then understandably slow to get going, it's well-behaved.

I've changed the fluid twice --- once using a professional shop, once doing it myself. It still has the same problem. So this one other likely suspect also can be ruled out.

I've swapped in another transmission control module with the exact same part number. Even the letter matched ... no improvement. So this one other likely suspect also can be ruled out.

This type of transmission was used in the early D2 Audi A8, before it was used in the C5 Audi A6. The early variations of this transmission used a particular design of clutch A drum, part number 1058 270 036, superseded by the interchangeable and slightly-improved 1058 270 040. So ZF recognized that this was a high-risk area, and a good place to improve.

On the two project cars that I own, the improved ZF part lasted 15 years. If it failed then, that means to me that there's even more room for improvement as to the high-risk area where the clutch A drum functions. Cascade Transmission Parts thinks so, and they offer a beefed-up made-in-the-US part that is an improvement over the already-improved ZF part.

My tech and I have personally dismantled a transmission of this kind and removed, then analyzed, its clutch A drum. That part was starting to fail though it had not yet failed catastrophically. It was fairly easy to infer what sequence of events had probably initiated this failure since it happened right by the end of the relevant snap ring.

One of my technical advisors owned his own transmission shop for 11 years, and before that he worked for another transmission shop for a long time. He has rebuilt hundreds of this particular type of transmission. Confirm: that's not a typo. Hundreds. And he has just advised me that "The A drum is most likely cracked, it is the number one problem on those."

Earlier ZF models such as the ZF 4 HP-22 also have shown the clutch A drum to be a fairly common point of failure: more reason to think that this general part is in a high-risk area.

One of my advisors reminded me that the clutch A drum fails for a reason. A typical reason is, he explained to me, is that the valve body wears out in the A clutch circuit, and this causes overpressure in the clutch A drum. Replacing the drum without making sure the valve body is OK ... that just invites a repeat of the same failure yet again.

If it turns out that the clutch A drum is fine, then then another likely suspect can be the valve body not causing the A clutch to behave right.

The third likely suspect is the low sprag at the freewheel, at the rear of the transmission.

I'm not picking on ZF; I love their stuff. That it takes so many years for something to finally break is a testament to ZF high quality. Given how vastly sophisticated this transmission is, and how much torque it has to handle, I'm amazed it works for so long, so well.
