Default Tuneup frequency and reasonable cost?

Just came from my Audi dealer with some minor work on my 2001 A6 2.7T. He said I needed my 40,000 mile tuneup, it would take 6 hours, and cost about $1100.

Does this make sense? What do they do that takes that long and costs that much?

Thanks in advance for your help on this...lotta money...would like to do the right thing...

Best plan is to keep your synthetic oil changes up, do some preventative maintenance if you haven't already, and keep driving until something breaks or acts up.
Then get on here and ask people how to fix whatever broke?

Cheapest plan out there.

If he is talking about changing the timing belt, it sounds too reasonable. During that job, you should replace water pump, thermostat, seals, and probably the tensioner.

i didprettymuchof my 40k service my self; oil change is pretty straight forward, plugs took a couple hours the first time, butis easy if youhave basic tools, there are a couple bolts that are a PITA to get to, Audi world has a good tech article on it, 2nd time around should be cake. you should be changing your cabin and air filter by yourself. DO NOT pay someone to do this for you!! lubricate your hinges, doors, sunroof etc..I know am leaving out a couple things.

if hes talking timing belt you can do it yourself. I wouldnt personally but it can be done. also check out: http://sonolithics.com/files/a6_links.html#tech

this has alot of info. welcome and good luck

Thanks for the responses...I don't need the timing belt replaced at this time...they said I need a tune-up every 40,000 miles...and they cost about $1100. The tune-up was to include air filter, oil filter, spark plugs, pollin filter, and changing of the oil...and takes six hours.

It seems like a lot of money for that...hence my question in the forums...

Thanks for your help!

Dude....slap slap slap....DO NOT pay $1100 dollars for that. You can do it yourself in about 3 hours in a garage with your buddies and a six pack of beer. Thats friggin highway robbery. All your out is thecost for parts.
