Default Turbo's gone bad?

I have a 2001 A6 2.7t with 74,000 miles. Always had recommended maintenance, synthetic oil, etc. While driving on the freeway the car started losing power, the check engine light came on, and I had to pull to the side of the road.

Turned the engine off, let it sit for a while, it started right back up. No engine lights, etc.

On the drive home, the engine light came on (not flashing). took it to an independent mechanic, he said catalytic converters were gone.

Took it to a dealer to have the converters replaced - they replaced under warranty, but said the turbo's were bad (lower boost / pressure ratings)

Would a bad turbo cause the behaviour described? Can turbo's cause the catalytic converters to go out? If the turbo's do need replaced, is it better to go stock, or is there an upgrade? What are the pro's and con's.

What might cause the turbo's to go out so suddenly?

Thanks,

the turbos would have given specific codes like P1295 or P1297 so I doubt its the turbos so you need those codes to confirm any problem

Default RE: Turbo's gone bad?

You need to check for a boost leak. Two places to check: your "f hose" and your throttle body boot. Do a search on these items to learn more -- or check out Stoney's Links (see my sig for details). My understanding is that your turbos are blown, you WILL know it (VERY loud screaming "dentist drill" sound coming from under the hood.

I'm guessing that you need a better independent mechanic. Check the regional forum to query for a really good Audi specialist in your area. You're probably dealing with something that will cost you TONS if you diagnose it wrong, a just a bit if you diagnose it right. The difference between these two options is a good mechanic.

Report back on how you made out.
