Type of brake fluid?

What type of brake fluid do I need for my 99 A6 Quattro? I just purchased a DOT 3 bottle of synthetic brake fluid, but I heard that the car needs DOT 4?

Noted on the cap of the brake fluid reservoir. 2001 is DOT4, but not quite sure about 1999. Read the cap.

Well, that's the problem: The words on the cap have faded away...

If anyone knows what type of brake fluid to use for my 99 A6 Quattro 2.8L, it would be greatly appreciated if you could tell me.

If I remember correctly it was DOT4, but even if it's DOT3 I don't see why using DOT4 would cause any harm. I also think that the 98-01 were similar so yeah DOT4 sounds about right.

For my model, which is the very first A6 model (1995), DOT4 is required.
I doubt they would have reverted back to DOT3 for '99 models, and then jump back to DOT4.

Go with DOT4, anyway since you are safe either way.
