Default Universal Synthetic ATF

A local shop offers tranny flush (triptronics) with BG Universal Synthetic ATF.

http://www.bgprod.com/blendr/syntheticATF.html

The fluid is red in color and compatible with DextronIII/Merkon and Equivalent to Audi Vw G 052 162 A2 (prints on the case ).

(no mentioning about ESSO LT71141). Price is more than 3x cheaper than the WV fluid.

Looks like revolutionary solution as no other fluid claims compatibility with all ATF aplications.

The shop manager claims no issues using BG Universal Synthetic ATF in any VW or Audi trannys.

Does this sound for real?
Any experience with that ATF?

I haven't used the brand, but as long as it meets the VAG requirement and the shop is willing to give you a warranty, I don't see why not.

I have generic synthetic ATF in my Tip from Kennedy Transmission. I would say about 3/4ths of mine is generic and I have had zero (knock on wood) problems in 2 years now. Theirs was tan, but I don't see how the color makes any difference. But Blue would be kinda fun.

My Audi parts supplier/expert provided me with a non-Audi WV synthetic tranny fluid for my 97 A6. I asked him if it was OK and he said that it was approvred by VAG for my vehicle but was not approved for the newer vehicles. I did not ask him for the definition of a newer vehicle.

BAsed on the application charts attached, one could say that '98 was the border year for new tiptronics that required Esso ATF.

My understanding is that Dextron III and Esso are not compatible.

On the other hand Castrol Multivehicle ATF claims compatibility with both Dextron III and Esso LT 71141.

I think there is difference if the ATF is added by drain out or complete flush- the quantity of the old fluid could mask eventual deficiencies of the new ATF...

Thx,

no attachments were done due to the size limits.
I have to figure out how to publicize them or PM to interested members.

nemohm - I think your correct about the dividing line being the trip...

In any case draining all the fluid is more than just removing the trans pan. The torque convertor has a ton of fluid in it and getting it empty is not simple...

that's why you drian once, then drain again either after driving around the block or 1000 miles down the road. At that point you'd have about 90% new fluid in the system.

My bimmer requires ESSO LT as well, but I've switched to Mobil One synthetic ATF with no problems. Apparently there are a lot of ATF's compatible with ESSO now.

Madridlover,

Mobil One synthetic ATF does not specify Esso LT under the Specifications and Approvals.

And you feel fine....

The mystery gets bigger.

According to the Mobil One website:

Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF
Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid

New Formula - Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF is designed to provide significantly higher levels of performance above conventional fluids in most domestic and imported passenger vehicles.

The synthetic base oil enables excellent performance even in the severest of operating conditions. It offers outstanding gear shifting and power transfer performance versus conventional ATF fluids. The inherently high viscosity index and stability of Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF help protect against thermal breakdown at high operating temperatures, while still providing outstanding performance at very low ambient temperatures.

Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF combines high-performance synthetic hydrocarbon base oils and a superior balanced additive system to provide significantly higher levels of performance above conventional fluids. This unique, advanced technology provides long drain capability, excellent friction retention, and low-temperature fluidity. Further, it helps to improve overall transmission durability and cleanliness. Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF is also compatible with conventional ATFs.

Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF is formulated for use in most North American, European and Asian vehicles.

Approved for Allison C-4 applications

Exceeds JASO 1-A performance standard

Also suitable for use in vehicles that specify the following fluid requirements:
Audi G 052 025-A2, G 052 162-A1
BMW LA2634
Esso LT 71141
ETL-7045E, ETL-8072B, N402

* Not recommend for CVT applications, MerconŽ SP, Ford Type F
** Mobil DEXRON-VI ATF is recommended for 2006 and newer GM vehicles and improved performance in 2005 and earlier vehicles, wherever DEXRON is specified.

Automatic transmissions should be checked for proper fluid levels at regular intervals, and the fluid should be changed at manufacturer-recommended intervals. However, this may vary due to your vehicle's operating conditions. Some manufacturers recommend more frequent changes of transmission fluid under severe driving conditions, such as heavy traffic, hot weather and trailer pulling.

Now, I've read some posts saying that although it's compatible with the ESSO called for in BMW trannies, Audi trannies are a little different and could damage them. All I know is to be on the safe side, I'll order the blauparts kit which comes with OEM pentosin ATF.
