There are no cost-effective upgrades for the 4.2 engine. It's already pretty powerful. A new exhaust may eke out a few more hp, but that's a real expensive proposal. It's also a heavy, AWD vehicle not made to be quick. But fast -- yes, it will cruise at 100-120 all day if you can find someplace to do it. I would forget performance and concentrate on maintenance to ensure your 10-year old vehicle has a long life. Brake fluid should be flushed every two years; diffy fluid probably needs changing (I do mine every 60k or so); and coolant may be due.

What he (ppgoal) said

One thing you can do is get a stage 1 from one of the known tuners - like APR. That will make it more responsive and feel more powerful overall. But that's about it for the 4.2 (unless you spend a chunk load of money, like somewhere around 10k and more).

(ppgoal) any idea how much it would cost for a exhaust system? also will a better fuel injector make it more responsive?

*APR is somewhere around 500 - 600 depending on if there is a sale going on. Others are usually pretty close.

*I also remember vaguely that GIAC had a superbike shifting program for the s-tronic 4.2 transmission (at least on the C5) that would make it shift much faster. Check out there website to see if they still have it for your model and car.

*There are supercharger kits for the c5 A6 with the 4.2 and they will run you close to 10 grand... I'm sure you can find them for the C6 as well if you look around. Here is an example: MotoDyne - Performance Technologies LLC -- Audi 4.2L V8 (C5 only for this example!)

*An exhaust will run you around 1500 - 2000. Here 1 example: Milltek Catback Exhaust for Audi A6 C6 4.2L

Better fuel injectors will not help by themselves.

The stock FI's are plenty good enough for a stock engine and they are specifically designed to inject the correct amount of fuel in a specific spray pattern for best efficiency and power.

Usually you upgrade the FI's if you need to inject more fuel than stock will allow but in order to burn more fuel you need more air and the only way to get more air is with forced induction like a supercharger.
