Using oil???

Hi guys.........I have a 2.0 TDI (07) and have put 11k miles on it in the last 4 months. Beautiful car to drive, but my question is this.
At around 5k miles I was getting twitchy about topping the oil on the Jag 2.5V6 (02) and thought also about checking the oil on the A6. Much to my amazement about 2 hours later my oil light came on
for low level.I checked and topped it up, took around 1 litre.
A few days ago having reached the 10k mark the light came on again and needed another litre???
I have asked a few people at Audi and they all say very matter of factly......yeah yeah they do use oil?
I ran Ford Mondeos for about 10 years, had about 4 of them and as they were company cars really gave them some stick.......never ever ever used any oil between servicing

Anyone know, is this normal???

If you babied it during break-in the rings may have not seated. Hard full throttle run ups help rings to seal when the engine is brand new. The first half hour is critical to bedding the rings. Or it could be possible the oil is broke down and near the end of its life. What brand of oil and how long has it been in the engine?
