Default Want to put Sirrus in car

A few months ago I inquired at the Audi dealer about getting factory Sirrus unit for our A6 (it's a 2005) and was told not a problem as the cars came pre-wired. Well my wife dropped the car at the dealer (unit was ordered in advance and no it was not paid for yet) after waiting 3 hours they came out and said it could not be done as the car was not pre-wired. They looked into it today and comfirmed that the wiring harness could not be put in (I think it's a load of bull)

Anyone have any ideas on which route to take as we are tired of listening to 30 minutes of talk/commercials and only 30 minutes of music, is there a alternative way to get it without hooking up a plug and play unit ? Our dash unit lets you select for sattelite but of course without the trunck unit no luck.

Any help would be helpfull.

Don't bother with the "stealership" - outside of warranty maintenance they won't have the expertise to do your install, and they'll charge you an arm and a leg just for walking through the door.

Short answer: You can get your satellite receiver wired direct to your radio - whoever you talked to that said you couldn't was full of BS.

If you absolutely have to have the factory unit installed, it can be likely be done, but it's going to be cumbersome and cost a lot of $$$ for the luxury of pushing that "SAT" button on your radio. You would probably be better off to just pick up a new receiver unit which will have updated technology and more features, and have the unit professionally installed into your dash. It will still look clean, and you can take it with you if you want to listen to the receiver on either a portable unit or a home stereo.

If you live close to Toronto try Kromer Radio, or failing that, Best Buy. They both have auto bay's and should be able to hardwire a unit into your car in an hour or two max. You may need an FM modulator to hook into your radio, but they can likely use the pre-wiring kit that came with your Sirius radio (assuming you purchase it as an aftermarket piece). It's well worth doing - the signal will be crisp and clean, and you won't have to keep searching for stations when you get close to the City. It should cost between $130 and $150 all in for the install. Ask about getting an audio jack at the same time - it might be useful if you want to use an iPod or MP3 player down the road.

Now if you are heart-set on getting the integrated OEM satellite unit, I would suggest you contact Metro Auto at 30 Cawthra Ave (near St. Clair and Keele). It's a bit out of the way, but for a 2 man shop (run by Dragan and his dad Zoran), they are the best Audi mechanics you'll find in the GTA. I service two A6's there (a 2.7T and a 4.2), as well as an A4 Cabrio and they have never let me down. They specialize in European auto's and they service mostly Audi's, VW's, Bimmer's and Mercedes. Dragan is the guy the service techs at the dealerships call when they get stumped - he's a mechanical genius, and has a list of supplier contacts as long as your arm. If anyone can figure out how to source and install a factory Sirius radio for you, it would be Dragan.

I also highly reccommend Metro Auto if something breaks and it's not under warranty. Get a quote from your dealer and then run it over to Metro and get an estimate - you'll be shocked at the difference (they saved me $5200 on a major engine repair that Audi quoted out at $7100!).

The number for the shop is 416-536-3169. Call any time after 10:30am and ask for Dragan. They are usually there until about 6pm. Zoran's english isn't so good, but he's been fixing cars for the Forest Hill set for 30 years so you can rest assured he know's his stuff.

Dragan can also refer you to service techs for anything from busted windshields to tires and rim specialists (gotta love Ontario's potholes...).

Good luck with the Satellite Radio - it makes for great listening across a ton of genres, and the stations play music that's deep in the catalogues of many artists that you'll never hear on the radio.

Cheers,

Wellsy, thanks so much for the great info, this is our first Audi but have had plenty of Mercedes and BMW's in the past and no all to well about the cost difference from the dealer to a outside shop. I have a guy in Oakville that is a award winning stereo installer and have yet to touch base with him about the install, but I will be talking with him this week. Thanks again, Mark
